Desert Olives

Little Red Treasures

While we haven’t been here all that long, we have learned a thing or two.  For one, we avoid large crowds of local men gathering around some spectacle.  Common sense.  Unless of course that crowd is of local and Bedouin men crowding around a pickup with a bed piled high with cherries, the men clamoring to buy them.  In that case, you’d best join that crowd.  So the other day, when I saw this scene, I joined those men and sure didn’t regret it.  The men, seeing I had a newborn strapped on and a little guy by my side (most of them know Caleb anyway), helped me get my two kilos of beautiful cherries at an amazing price.  I threw only two cherries away in the whole bunch.  And with the rest?  I have a little helper for pitting.  We froze them, dehydrated them, and turned them into delicious sauce for yogurt and topped a cheesecake for Independence Day.  What a fun week!
