Autumn Favorites

Making Pumpkin Lattes:

*no missing out on seasonal Starbucks for us! this recipe is adapted from here

1. Puree some pumpkin and put a few spoonfuls in a cup

2. Add cinnamon (1tsp), nutmeg (1/4 tsp) and ginger (1/2 tsp)

3. Add a sweetener like sugar, honey, syrup

4. Add all this to about a cup of milk and mix it up, then heat about 1/2 cup of the mixture

5. Add some strong coffee or, if you’re starting to get used to it,  make up some Nescafe and add it.

6. Put the other half of the  milk mixture in a jar, strap baby son on, put on head scarf and go surprise someone with a treat!

Making and eating lots of Soup:

My favorite involves simmering some carrots, potatoes (sweet potatoes if I can find them!), & white and green onions in a big pot of water with italian spices added for about 45 minutes.  Then, let it cool and puree it all.  Return to pot and add some ginger, a little sugar and some salt and pepper as you heat it.  Finally swirl in some cream, yogurt or lebneh (a thickened yogurt).   Sure to make chilly evenings warmer and a Caleb favorite.

Using Persimmons

There are persimmons at our local souk and, besides being a fantastic color, they can be used to substitute apple or pumpkin in recipes.  Of course, the most proper use of persimmons is in persimmon pudding, a Christmas tradition…
