Pomelos and Pomegranates

Like any toddler, Caleb would happily eat bread and butter for every meal, but there are some fun perks as we watch this little one engage with all the local foods and develop a pension for trying new things.  I smile as I watch this guy down roasted lamb or molakhia (a bitter green) with local friends.  Or ask for more pickled eggplants stuffed with red chilis and walnuts, called “Makdous”.  He’s braver than I am.  In early Fall, we have pomelos and pomegranates and Caleb loves them both.  The first time we brought home a pomelo, Caleb kept eying the big green Dr. Seuss fruit saying “Open it Mama!”  Finally, we did and separated the flesh full of slightly sour-bitter and mostly sweet flavor pods.  Pomegranates have always been a favorite  What could be better than a bowl full of sweet pink jewels to eat?  It sure helped when we learned how to open them.  Now they are a bigger part of Fall for us.
